Welcome to the world of Polymaths. You might have heard of them as a Jack of all trades and master of none; however, there's an important addition that's missed. They're most often better than a master of just one trade. "Jack of all trades and master of none, but most often better than a master of one." For years, I struggled because I wasn’t an expert in a specific field. Instead, I was a generalist, and I excelled in areas most people failed at. At work, I could be tossed onto any project in any discipline or domain and make it better. It's an aspiration not an endstate that three crucial elements: So why these three books? Because they were the foundational texts that introduced me to these concepts and helped me develop this mindset. What is fun is that only one of them is really about polymaths. The other two add richness and texture to the idea without even knowing they're harnessing an ancient superpower in polymathic thinking. (It took this aspiring polymath to pull these threads together)       - [Elephant Riding: A Collection](https://thesingularitychronicles.com/shop/human-behavior-psychology-and-personal-development/elephant-riding/): Robert Heinlen said: “Man is not a rational animal; he is a rationalizing animal.” It’s an idea supported by psychology, sociology, and neurology and something I call Elephant Riding. Jump down the rabbit hole and see how three popular books, Thinking, Fast and Slow by Nobel laureate Daniel Kahneman, The Happiness Hypothesis by renowned author Jonathan Haidt, and Descartes’ Error by neuroscientist Antonio Demasio, weave together the Elephant of emotion (our fast brain), the rider of reason (our slow brain), and how it’s all wired together. It’s a core part of the science fiction novel Paradox: Book One of The Singularity Chronicles, where humans strive to create a super-intelligence and end up learning what it means to be human as chaos ensues. The main character, Kira, finds that the blend of emotion with logic is the essential missing component that creates true artificial general intelligence. As I summarize the events of Paradox at the beginning of Book 2: Integration:
The rational and logical outcome of the emotionless AIs had been apocalyptic. Reason uncoupled from emotion and emotion uncoupled from reason tore the world apart.
This is Elephant Riding and is based on the work of three three books:
  1. Jonathan Haidt’s book The Happiness Hypothesis articulates a better understanding of the balance of emotion and reason like an elephant and its rider. The rider represents the rational mind; it is analytical, strategizes, thinks long-term, and carefully plans. The elephant is our emotional mind; fast, responsive, passionate, reckless, and motivated. The elephant is huge, and the rider is tiny.
  2. Antonio Damasio, a neuroscience professor, wrote a book called Descartes’ Error that identifies pure reason as not only impractical but also doesn’t lead to better outcomes. Demasio tells the story of a patient whose problem wasn’t caused by a lack of reason but by the opposite. Brain surgery had damaged the brain’s connection between logic and emotion. He’d lost his elephant, and without that emotion, he lost his job and his wife and ended up penniless. Worse, he couldn’t even feel the relief of sadness about it.
  3. Thinking, Fast and Slow by Daniel Kahneman completes the trifecta by describing two systems: "System 1" is fast, instinctive, and emotional; "System 2" is slower, more deliberative, and more logical.  System 1 is your Elephant, and System 2 is your Rider.

If I got money each time that word is uttered I'd have at least 20 cents (sorry...Dad joke... Pair-of-dimes?) Thomas Kuhn brought that term into the zeitgeist of the business world and it's become almost passé, but underneath, he's hit on a crucial finding: Science is not gradual, it’s iterative. That's no simple statement either. It's as Max Planck says: "Science progresses one funeral at a time" This is a POWERFUL book that needs to be required reading everywhere. Newtonian physics was opposed be Euclidian, Einsteinian physics was opposed by Newtonian... Each era of technology is opposed by what's in the past and AI is no exception. You might ask, "Why did AI come into this conversation?" It's because in Paradox: Book One of The Singularity Chronicles, Kira has to deal with overcoming the bias of past generations.  She finds that history is replete with nearly identical arguments over everything from Plato railing against the written word, to scribes opposing the printing press, to painters protesting photographers, and photographers lamenting cellphone cameras. The pattern goes back millennia regarding technology, risks, ethics, and more.  Thomas Kuhn does a great job explaining why this is which is why I highly recommend his book. He shows that, just as human bones get stronger when subjected to stress and tension, and rumors or riots intensify when someone tries to repress them, many things in life benefit from stress, disorder, volatility, and turmoil. What Taleb has identified and calls “antifragile” is that category of things that not only gain from chaos but need it in order to survive and flourish. In Antifragile, Taleb stands uncertainty on its head, making it desirable, even necessary, and proposes that things be built in an antifragile manner. The antifragile is beyond the resilient or robust. The resilient resists shocks and stays the same; the antifragile gets better and better. If you've read the book, you know that Antifragility is a very counterintuitive concept and many struggle with bringing it into practical application. Taleb goes into great detail into how so many things in our world are built around antifragility but the layers go so much deeper than this starting point. If you've struggled to really understand the concept of Antifragile, try a more approachable introduction with This Baseline and from there you can use Taleb's foundation to explore it's impact on many topics such as: Taleb's introduction is essential reading and creates a foundation for critical topics found in both Paradox and Integration Books One and Two of The Singularity Chronicles. René Descartes was a French philosopher, mathematician, and scientist famous for saying: “I think, therefore I am.” He believed that the mind and the body were completely separate and that the mind could operate through conscious reasoning unaffected by emotion.  Although those ideas have permeated Western Culture for a long time, Descartes was totally wrong.

Antonio Damasio, a Neuroscience Professor, identified that pure reason is not only impractical, it also doesn’t lead to better outcomes. Demasio tells the story of a patient who had a life-threatening brain tumor removed. After the surgery, he was as intelligent on IQ as before but they soon found he couldn’t make decisions, even small ones like where to go for lunch. He’d rationally calculate calories, available parking, and driving time, but couldn’t efficiently make a decision.  In the end, Dr. Demasio would recommend an option and the patient latched on to that finite answer.

Descartes' Error is a wonderful book to pair with The Happiness Hypothesis by Jonathan Haidt which describes logic like a rider and emotion like an elephant.
